Zagreb is also well known for its rich sports tradition. The city often hosted great sports events among which World Sports Games 1987 and the European Basketball Championship for Men in 1989 are the biggest. Owing to the World Students Games, held in Zagreb in 1987, many sports objects were built. One of them is also the »Dražen Petrović Basketball centre«, where Cibona plays its home games. There are also many succesful teams, sportsmen and sportswomen from Zagreb which won trophies and medals at the biggest world's competitions. Cibona for example won the European League's trophy, it is the same with the handball club Badel Zagreb, women's volleyball club Mladost, waterpolo club Mladost and others. Tennis player Iva Majoli won Roland Garros, one of four tournaments for Grand Slam, in 1997.

Zagreb is also known by its excellent soccer players and soccer clubs. Many clubs and individuals also made good results in table tennis, swimming, athletics and shooting. Together with all the sports potential, which includes many sports halls, stadions, swimming pools and skating rinks, the city definitely became the city of youth and sport in recent years.
